California Assisted Living Update

I just finished uploading all the assisted living facilities for Arizona and am currently working on North Carolina. Arizona was a big surprise with almost 2000 assisted living facilities. I think that California has almost 6000 facilities but currently I only have around 400. One I get all the California facilities including Los Angeles assisted living facilities entered, I will have over 12,000 facilities in the directory. Not Bad.
Most of the state governments have been good to work with. By the end of August, I must have every assisted living and Alzheimer's facility in Georgia. I am going home to meet with dad's facility manager and nurse so see if they can give him additional assistance. His mental condition seems to be changing rapidly as he reverts into a child. That is why I will need to have a complete list of dementia care facilities ready when the assisted living facility will no longer accept him. We are very thankful that he is happy in his dementia. So many seniors get angry, frustrated and mean. My dad is mostly sweet with an occasional bit of angry confusion. The nurses raided his apartment this week and took his bottle of vodka. The alcohol that destroyed his frontal lobe should be avoided but my dad's doctor (Dr. Tucker) is an idiot. He told my dad that it was OK for him to drink so he won't listen to anyone else. It really stinks when your parent doctor is actually doing damage. Anyways, this should be a big month for my dad and for the site so stay tuned.

California Trends For Seniors

California is the leading edge of the United States. With about 10% of the seniors in the country living in California, it is the state to look for future trends in assisted living and retirement living. California is driving the way for a better environment by forcing or working around our corrupt federal government by forcing better air quality down the throats of the lazy US automaker and hopefully they can do more to make life better in other areas. With the recent decline in the real estate market parts of California are becoming more affordable for seniors and that is a good thing. My hope is that California can address the lack of federal regulation over health care. If there is any thing that scares me, it is the future of health care. With the current trends, it looks some health care companies will only cover healthy people and only cover what they want to pay for. It is getting to be embarrassing to live in a country that does take care of it's seniors. With the 78 million baby boomers getting ready to tax our senior services, we are headed for a melt down.
OK, my rant is over. I feel a little better. So I am proud to release a new set of California assisted living facilities. Although I do not have all the facilities, this is a good update to the resources to California seniors. After researching Alzheimer's recently, I am planning on adding all the California memory care centers too. Alhtough my dad actually has frontal lobe dementia, our dealings with the doctors make is evident that his future is similar to that of an Alzheimer's patient. It is getting to the point where he will agree to do something and then almost immediately forget that he agreed if is not part of his normal operations.
Back to California, this is one of the only state that currently has a city released. Eventually the site plan is to release the top 200 or so cities that have a big senior population to support a separate page.

Assisted Living Love Gone Bad

Thing made a dramatic change for the worse this week. My father received a note from The Garden at Sandy Springs Assisted Living Facility that he would be forced out of the facility if he did not stop trying to see his ex girlfriend. The family has banned my father from seeing her. It is a little of a tale like Romeo And Juliet, the love each other but unfortunately, she has Alzheimer's and her doctor (and family) does not think she should be in a relationship so the two have been separated. Thing got really bad when dad locked himself in her bathroom and they had to get a locksmith to get him out. Currently he is find but my sister and I are betting he gets the boot eventually. So we are back looking for another Georgia assisted living facility. He wants to stay in Sandy Spring (Atlanta) so we will be checking out every facility in the area and posting the results on the site. Luckily dad does not have a ton of stuff to move. Again he thinks he should just move back into his old house but we can't let that happen, it is too unsafe.
Wendy at the assisted living facility says he is showing some dementia and he needs some extra care. Daaaa. He still thinks he is a rock star.

Colorado Assisted Living

Colorado is the home to my family so my wife and I have spent a lot of time looking at assisted living and independent living facilities in the area. In our neighborhood of Louisville (right next to Boulder), there is a good variety of facilities including several upscale ones. To our surprise we found that some independent living facilities like Balfour are incredibly nice and incredibly expensive. The Balfour facility in Louisville has private cottages that start at $6300 per month. That does include 20 meals and food is fantastic but it makes my retirement fund look really small. There are also facilities in Boulder like Fraser Meadows that require deposits of over $100,000 non-refundable just to get into the facility. So if you want to retire and live like a king or queen in a Colorado assisted living facility, you better have a big retirement account.
In general, this means that you need to have about 2 million dollars in the bank when you retire if you want the best coverage during your retirement age.

Assisted Living

This is the first post on the subject of helping family with assisted living and other senior transitions. My wife and I each have one living parent that is making the transition from living at home to living somewhere where they can get extra help. Hull ( my dad) moved into assisted living last year after a stroke. Mable is slowly losing her memory so she will need someone to help her in the next few years. We have made several plans for Mable but she soon forgets that we made the plan so they never happen. We have had to make several different changes to support our family and we are part of the sandwich generation ( rising kids at the same time we are caring for our parents). Add this to the general poor economic conditions and we are a very busy family. We hope that our experience can be shared with others and we hope that others have a smoother transition with their parents.
